I went to a local bookshop with a friend and picked up a monthly computer and technology magazine called Data Quest. The first chunk is about new technologies and products in the market, while the last 10 pages are filled with job opportunities. Most of the listings had only PO Box numbers, but there was one US company that had a phone and fax number. It was called Computer Information Technology Corporation and was based in Phoenix, Arizona.
And I said, gee, that is interesting. I mean, nobody gives a phone number. I was alone at home. and it was May, very hot, so I picked up and called the number. Someone answered at the other end. I said that I'm from Bahrain and I saw this ad and he said they were looking for someone to work on some specific technology. And I was actually working on this technology at that time!
So he asked me to fax my resume. I prepared it and faxed it and gave my friend’s number for correspondence since he had a fax machine. Then I forgot about it because my wife came from India to Bahrain after her visa came through. And after my wife came, within two weeks, my friend knocked on the door and said, “You have a fax.” It was an offer letter. That guy didn’t even interview me. He verified my credentials from a common distributor and then sent me the offer.
I talked to my wife and asked what she thought we should do. She asked me if I really wanted to go. I said that it looked interesting but I didn’t know. Then finally we were having lunch one day and we decided to just do it.
I was telling my kids that I don't think I'd do it again. Because so many things could have gone wrong. I had met V only for an hour or two before I got married to her. I have no idea about who I'm going to meet on the other side. It was all blind trust and with nothing in my pocket, but thankfully it all worked out.
