My grandparents had a big farm in Oregon and we would stay there the summers and help my grandad pick berries, apples, walnuts, and hazelnuts.
We didn’t have any kind of device and played outside a lot. I played cowboys and Indians with my brother, he would play dress up with me. Back then you could ride your bike wherever you wanted, and no one bothered you. We didn’t worry about bad people. We were totally happy. We had one neighbour but they didn't have children. But they had a TV so we would go there to watch cartoons. It had indoor antennae and the man would tease us about it being Martian stuff.
When we’d go to my grandparents farm, there was a gas pump by the house to fill the tractor with gas. My brother and I would pretend we were farmers. We had one of those red wagons to pull around. T would pull it up and he would say “Give me some gas, L.”
I can remember helping my granny do the laundry. She had one of those old wringer type washers. The clothes would swish around and you run them through a wringer to squeeze out the water. I think it had a cranking handle. One day I put the clothes in the rollers to go through and my whole arm went through. It didn’t hurt me, I was able to pull my arm out. It went to just about my elbow. We hung the clothes on the clothes line to dry.
We didn’t have the funds to do a lot of outside stuff, but there were some special moments. I can remember one time we went to the drive-in movie. We got a hamburger and then went to the movies; it was probably a kids movie. Another time I remember getting to go to the county fair. I remember holding my mother’s hand and walking around the fair. We couldn’t go on rides. If we were really lucky we’d get a 5 cent ice cream cone. We didn’t put up a fuss.
