After my father graduated he went to work for W.R. G, a company that imported chemicals and minerals. They sent him to Cartagena and I never heard much about their life. All I heard was it was a beautiful place to live and they thought they’d like to retire there. At some point after that he went to work for the international division of F T. He liked to travel and was assigned to India.
He could only get two-year visas. So the family would spend two years in India then come back to the US to renew the visa. They went back and forth to India from 1939 to 1951; in between we were in Berkeley. My mother would take us out there once my father had the flat set up. I made two trips to Bombay by ship.
I don’t know when they went, it must have been during or just before 1939 because my oldest sister was born in Bombay. They got a flat in MP and used to have cocktail parties and friends over. I remember one time someone was having a party in the building next to us and Erroll Flynn was there. My sister took us to the balcony and we waved to him. My parents joined the Willingdon Country Club because it allowed Indians to join. There was another one that was only British and they didn’t want that. Dad would play golf every weekend at Willingdon and we would go to Breach Candy to swim. My oldest sister must have gone to school in Mumbai; my brother and I went to W School, and I’m assuming my sister went there, too.
We left India in 1951 because F moved my dad into the home office in Akron, Ohio. We settled there and bought a house on CB. F probably had ideas of keeping him there and moving him up the corporate ladder. My own estimation is he rebelled at the thought of sitting in an office with no travel. So my dad left F and went to GT who sent him to Mexico City. He had to take Spanish lessons before he went. We sold the house and mom and us kids moved to Berkeley while dad moved to Mexico City to get things set up. I was in 5th grade and about 10 years old when this happened, so it was about 1953. We were there for about two years, between 1953-1955.
